Finding cheap flights to Japan can be the beginning of a memorable trip, but the cheapest-looking ticket is not always the best itinerary. Tokyo and Osaka offer different arrival choices, and the right airport depends on where your trip actually begins.
Cheap flights to Japan: choose the right airport
Tokyo has two major passenger airports, Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT). Haneda is generally closer to central Tokyo, while Narita can still be a perfectly good choice depending on fares, arrival times and the transport connection. Compare actual travel time and cost to your hotel, not only the airport code.
Kansai International Airport (KIX) serves the Osaka region. If you plan to explore Kyoto, Osaka and Nara first, arriving in Kansai may reduce a long transfer from Tokyo. Open-jaw tickets, such as flying into Tokyo and home from Osaka, can also avoid backtracking.
Use your travel dates strategically
Japan has busy travel periods, including cherry-blossom season, Golden Week and some year-end holidays. Exact timing varies, and cherry blossoms do not bloom on a guaranteed date. A trip that is flexible by a week or two may offer very different flight and lodging choices.
Avoid comparing only ticket prices. Hotel availability during high-demand weeks can change the total trip budget enough to outweigh a small airfare difference.
Compare direct flights with connections
A nonstop route can be appealing after a long journey, especially when traveling with children or carrying several bags. One-stop itineraries may reduce the ticket price, but confirm transit requirements, baggage handling and connection protection.
Allow time to adjust to Japan’s time zone. Landing late at night may limit transport options, so check the last train or airport bus before choosing a flight based only on arrival airport.
Keep planning simple after booking
Confirm entry requirements for your nationality using official resources, check luggage rules for every airline on the itinerary, and arrange your first airport-to-hotel transfer. A portable charger and offline map can make the arrival day easier.
When your dates are set, compare fares using an eligible travel partner’s live search form rather than relying on promotional prices that may no longer exist.
Plan the first day before choosing the fare
An afternoon arrival can give you time to pick up transit tickets, locate your hotel and get a simple meal before resting. A late-night arrival may be fine if your lodging is close to the airport or you already know which transport service operates at that hour. Include this first-day tradeoff in your flight search.
If your itinerary includes Tokyo and Kyoto, write the route on paper before shopping: for example, three nights in Tokyo, three nights near Kyoto, and a final departure from Kansai. Compare round-trip Tokyo flights with a multi-city itinerary, then add train and hotel prices to the result. The flight with the smallest ticket price is not always the least expensive trip.

Compare Tokyo flights and accommodation together
Before paying for a ticket, compare the full trip cost for each date combination. Record the airfare, checked baggage, seat charges, airport transfers and accommodation in the same currency. Use the same number of nights for each comparison so that a shorter stay does not make one option look artificially cheaper.
For a Los Angeles to Tokyo or New York to Tokyo search, compare the airports available for your actual dates and check whether the return uses a different airport. Do not assume that every route operates daily. If a connection involves changing airports, calculate that transfer separately and confirm how your bags will be handled.
